Why do I need this fitting?

The male quick coupler riser has a 3/4" MNPT (male national pipe thread). This is a different type of thread style than your common garden hose.

A garden hose's thread is called GHT or garden hose thread. What makes GHT different is that it is slightly wider spaced and deeper grooved than NPT. This makes transitional piece necessary when you have to join the two different types of thread.
